Use travel to get better, not broker!

Live that dream while working on your goals.

Use Travel as a Tool to Make Real Progress

For the inspired idiot who doesn’t want to be stuck

You want to see the world. You want to experience different cultures and live an exciting life — and that doesn’t have to be a “someday” thing. IN FACT, it shouldn’t be.

You should travel WHILE you work on your business, fitness, and relationship goals — and USE travel to actually progress faster.

This newsletter will explain…

  1. Why we (the inspired idiots) choose to travel while we grow our business, and

  2. How to make travel an investment into your personal development instead of a luxury you have to earn in time.

Why not live out one dream while you work toward another? Life is too short to live with a “someday” mentality.

Travel now, and use it to help you progress faster in your goals.

inspired idiots section break - STRATEGY

  1. Stop thinking of travel as a luxury.

  2. Start viewing it as an investment into personal development.

  3. Switch from location-bound jobs to remote work (freelancing, consulting, or your own online business).

  4. No more two-week vacations. Trips must be one-month minimum.

  5. Choose accommodations that are optimized for progress (strong WiFi, motivating gym, spaces to relax).

  6. Use time away to remove distractions and reassess recent habits.

inspired idiots section break - WHY IT WORKS

On your personality

When you remove yourself from your environment, you remove yourself from the ruts that you didn’t realize you were in.

A new environment will change you, because you go into adaptation mode.
You must adapt to different living spaces, neighborhoods, gym setups, a new timezone, new people, and even new ways of getting food.

By stepping out of your routine, you get some perspective on how you’ve been living. You’ll realize which pieces of home you miss, and what you don’t want to go back to.

It’s like you get a bird’s eye view on who you are. You actually become smarter about YOU!

I did this almost 10 years ago when I decided to quit being bulimic.
I can’t say that traveling fixed the issue for me — but when I removed myself from my home, friends, and habits, I didn’t throw up for the entire six months.

I got to come to a place where no one knew me, and pick which parts of me I wanted to bring.

Stepping out of our comfort zone is the key to becoming a better version of ourselves. You get to decide who you are when you’re not around all the things that make you you.

On your business

Now, use this same mindset to find ruts in your work routines. Revaluate what you’re focusing your time on, and how you feel about it.

For example: we were grinding in December, taking sales calls for 12 hours / day. We got into such a flow that the days started blurring together, but we weren’t making time for the work that really excites us — making content for other inspired idiots!

Coming to Thailand required us to either stay up all night long, or take less sales calls. We opted for the latter and we loved the new routine!

Instead of doing sales calls → gym → content creation,
we’re doing content creation → gym → sales calls.

We often don’t realize how stuck we are until something forces us to get unstuck.

Traveling forces you to get unstuck.

On your productivity

You get an automatic “out” from typical commitments.

When we’re home, distractions are everywhere and every week.
Get togethers, weddings, birthday parties, pet-feeding favours.

But when you’re away, you’re gifted an automatic out without any internal struggle.

You can now focus on you and what YOU want to spend time on.

It’s like entering a real-life hyperbolic time chamber: you walk in, and time moves differently. You have a large amount of time to dedicate to whatever you want.

When we were planning this trip to Thailand, we felt excited for two solid months of focusing on our business, our gym goals, and having new, “touristy” adventures together.

Changing your environment makes it easy to focus on forming new habits.

inspired idiots section break - PRICING

Here are some changes we’ve implemented so that traveling doesn’t feel like a stressful spend:

  1. Make money remotely, so we can keep earning while abroad.

  2. Keep our monthly expenses around 30% of our typical monthly income. This allows us to budget in travel.

  3. Expense the trip. If you use the time away to further your business via meetings, networking events, or creating content, then travel can be written off as a business expense. The specific rules around this will depend on the tax laws of your area and should be discussed with your accountant.

inspired idiots section break - PRODUCTIVITY HACK

Pick accommodations where your focus zone, fitness facility, and relaxation space are all in one building. Make it as easy as possible to hit your daily goals.

Hotels and rental units typically offer discounts for stays longer than three weeks. Use those discounts to your advantage and pick an awesome spot that you’re going to feel excited to get shit done in!

For example, here’s the place we stayed in while in Thailand. Look at all that opportunity for working, exercising, and creative thinking!
One month here cost us less than a typical month of expenses at home.
