I interviewed burnout strategists for you

Here's why most entrepreneurs burn out in the first 3-5 years

What’s one fear you struggle with?

Have you ever had a day where you literally had to remind yourself, “Why am I so stressed about this? No one’s going to die here.”

Well, when you’re a counterterrorism police officer or a prison guard, that is a real possibility at work.

That’s why I wanted to talk with burnout recovery coaches Laura and Barry (Loz and Boz).

There are so many coaches talking about burnout today, but Loz and Boz’s intense backgrounds convinced me that these two have lived some real mental health challenges.

After Loz was medically retired from the police force and experienced extreme burnout (imagine being in bed for weeks, not even able to watch TV), she and Boz made a decision:

They were going to dedicate their lives to helping entrepreneurs not only overcome burnout—but to say, “Burnout was the best thing that ever happened to me.”

If you’ve ever felt like you’re on the brink of a mental breakdown, you’re not alone.

This one’s for you.

Welcome to Inspired Idiots.

Why is this worth talking about?

I don’t think people talk enough about how anxiety-inducing it is to step out of the 9-5 life and go after your dream one.

  • How alone you’ll feel sometimes

  • How it seems like you’re doing everything wrong

  • Or how easy it is to compare yourself to other people who seem successful.

That’s why Loz and Boz focus only on helping founders and entrepreneurs.

“Entrepreneurs are the backbone of any country. And there’s not enough support for people like us.”

So why do most entrepreneurs burn out around that 3-5 year mark?

“Starting a business is fun and exciting. We imagine how successful we’re going to be, and we do everything to get it off the ground.

Then we work more and more. And the business grows, and it becomes this monster that consumes you.

Usually around 3-5 years in, you’re at that place where you want to stop doing all the work yourself, but you might not have the funds to hire.

So, you keep working. And slowly but surely, we lose our identity.

Me? I became my business. That’s all I talked about.”

- Loz

You built this thing so you could be free, but somehow you’ve become its prisoner.

Am I burning out, or just stressed?

Here’s a simple way to tell.

Stress is a normal human emotion, and it’s okay to feel it from time to time.

But if you’re…

  • feeling stressed more than any other emotion

  • not enjoying working on your business anymore

  • often comparing yourself to people around you or online

…maybe it’s time to pause and take care of you.

The burnout self assessment quiz

Loz and Boz put together a free 26-question quiz to help you reflect on how your last 2-4 weeks have been going.

The goal here is to identify signs of burnout and interrupt the pattern before it gets to that point.

“So many people have said it’s ‘scary accurate’ and it’ll give you a detailed breakdown of mental, physical, and emotional burnout signs.”

Anyone who takes the quiz can book a free session with Loz and Boz, where they’ll help you make a plan for what you can tweak in your business to get back to a better place.

Your takeaway

One truth I’ve come to believe about achieving a big goal (whether it’s entrepreneurship, fitness, wealth) is that most people just give up too soon.

And burnout is just one cause of that.

So, if more of us got the support we needed, and understood the signs of burnout before we get there, we’d see more people achieving their big goals.

My hope is this sets you on that path.

Because what you’re working on is important.
