Building a life that feels good in your body.
How does someone do that?
Have you ever noticed there are some people who move through life with a lightness and confidence,
are able to make quick decisions,
and seem to be so clear in their direction?
And even when things go wrong, they quickly pivot and don’t allow themselves to stay stuck.
What’s their secret?
How do they avoid the “normal” things that most of us struggle with — procrastination, overwhelm, distraction, imposter syndrome, fear, failure?
Well, I asked Alyssa — a life and business coach who specializes in embodiment.
Embodiment = feeling confident in your actions because you know how to feel what’s right for you.
Here’s her answer to the “secret”…
Think about it like this…
When we try to avoid discomfort, it usually makes it more difficult — because avoiding it doesn’t resolve that discomfort inside you.
But approaching these situations with curiosity and acceptance makes the whole experience feel easier.
Neuroscience research shows that it only takes 90 seconds for an emotion to pass through the body energetically.
Those people who seem effortlessly confident might have just had a lot of practice in listening to their body.
They have worked on their ability to “sit in the fire” of uncomfortable feelings. They accept the current situation without getting stuck in stories and judgment.
So, how do you practice this skill and become someone who can keep moving forward happily through any situation?
Realign with your values by proactively changing your current situation without overhauling your entire life.
Practice presence. Most of us spend the majority of our time thinking about tomorrow or yesterday. Coming back to presence is when we’re at our most powerful and peaceful.
Work on your YOU intelligence. Learning how to understand our emotions is a skill that most of us were never taught, yet it’s one of the most life-changing skills you can master.
1. Values
Write out 3-5 values that are important to you in life and business. Here are the 12 most common ones:
Integrity: Acting in a way that you’re proud of, even when no one is watching.
Respect: Treating others with consideration and dignity.
Responsibility: Taking ownership of your decisions and actions.
Compassion: Showing kindness, understanding, and support towards others.
Courage: Being willing to face your fears and challenges.
Perseverance: Persisting through difficulties and obstacles with determination.
Honesty: Being truthful in communication and actions.
Gratitude: Appreciating and expressing thankfulness for what you have today.
Connection: Investing time, energy, and attention into the relationships that nourish and strengthen you
Empathy: Sharing the perspectives of others, and acting with compassion towards them.
Authenticity: Being true to yourself, and aligned with your values and beliefs.
Generosity: Sharing resources and compassion freely — without expecting anything in return.
Once you’ve written your 3-5 — put a check mark next to the ones you’re currently prioritizing in your life and business.
What’s not lining up for you?
Example: if you noted connection as important, but you work alone, ask yourself how you can bring more connection into your life. Maybe you meet a friend for coffee every Monday or join a community of people with similar interests.
Feeling confident and at-ease comes from living a life that you feel is right for you.
2. Presence
You probably spend most of your day thinking about your next task, the next thing to pay for, or what your mom said at dinner the other night.
Are you ever fully present in the right now?
If you want to become the you that’s happier and more confident — it’s time to bring yourself back to now.
How?
Personally, I’ve never stuck to daily meditation for more than a few months because it just feels like another thing to do. What has worked for me is taking 15-second breath pauses throughout my day — whenever I remember to.
Simply focus on feeling the air move in and out of your body. This pause allows you to notice how your body feels.
Can you let your shoulders come down a little? Can your chest open up a bit more? Are your eyes squinting?
Being fully here helps us feel confident making decisions because we’re not in that scatter-brained “I need time to think about this” mode 24/7.
We’re here, we’re aware, and we’re capable of handling this.
3. You
Do you wonder why you feel defensive when someone questions the decisions you make?
Our emotions have important information to tell us, yet we often avoid or silence them because we haven’t properly learned how to interpret them.
This creates an internal loop of shame or guilt that keeps us feeling stuck.
The next time you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, angry — stop whatever you’re doing and just pay attention to you.
What’s happening in your body?
What is this emotion telling you about yourself?
Some helpful ways to pull this out are by journalling, recording a voice note talking yourself through it or — even better — explaining it to someone else.
Once the energy of the emotion has come up and out, you’ll notice that you feel lighter.
Getting clear on what really fulfills you in life will empower you to make stronger decisions, because you’ll know what feels good and why.
This gives you a sense of direction in business, relationships, and whatever other areas you want to expand into.
Your body will tell you when something feels right or not — if you listen.
