Are you making excuses for yourself?

Use this 5-step exercise to see, and snap out of it.

Why You Tell Yourself It’s Hard to Become What You Want to Be

If you’re not your ideal self…
If you’re not as financially free, as fit, or as in love as you want to be…
Then stay here for a few minutes.

How important are these goals for you? Are you actively trying to make them real, or are you pretending to try?

This will help you figure it out, and get clear on what you need to do next.

Here’s the first thing you need to understand: change is not hard. Becoming everything you want to be is not the hard part — the step right before it is. That’s what this is about.

Let’s take that step.

  1. Write down one thing about you that you’re not proud of.

  2. Am I doing absolutely everything I possibly can right now to change this?” — Write YES or NO.

  3. Set a timer for 10 minutes and write down every single thing you could ever possibly try to improve this.

  4. Put a next to the actions you’ve already taken.

  5. Circle ONE of those unchecked actions, and commit to starting tomorrow.

We Lie to Ourselves About Trying

It’s only hard to change when you don’t truly want to change.

“When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.”

Eric Thomas

We don’t MAKE our goals real because we tell ourselves that it’s “not the end of the world” if we don’t. That ends here.

You have to decide that being everything you want to be isn’t a “nice to have” anymore. You are going to make it happen.

Because here’s the thing you probably won’t like hearing…

If you secretly hate looking in the mirror, but you’re not doing anything about it…
If you feel unfulfilled with your job, but you’re not pursuing anything else…
If you regularly spat with your partner and keep telling yourself that they’re the problem…

you don’t want the change bad enough yet.

The Hard Part — Stop Lying to Yourself

You might feel yourself getting defensive here. Your mind might start thinking of all the little things about your life that make achieving your goals seem “unrealistic.”

That’s why this step is the hard part. Getting real with yourself and taking responsibility for what your life is today is tough.

We all have stories of experiences that made us who we are. Trauma is real. Scars are real. But many of us get stuck in our stories — as though our past pain should give us an out in our future.

So, let me ask you…
Do you believe that the you you want to be is “too hard” because of something that’s happened in your past? Or, maybe, are you using your stories as an excuse to not even try?

You wake up every single day and choose what actions you take. And if you’re still telling yourself that it’s “too hard” to change because of what you’ve been through, then you’re choosing every single day to stay put.

You are a product of your past — but you are not a prisoner of it. Let your stories go, and build the future you want.

The Easy Part — Change

If you’re trying to accomplish something, it’s not your story that gets you there — it’s your action. Your old story does not matter anymore.

Think about it like this:

You walk into the gym and see a really fit woman working out.
Maybe she works hard for that body because she loves herself,
or maybe she does it because she’s getting a revenge body on her ex.

Does it matter? Not really.
The required action is still the same, no matter what her story is.
She commits. She shows up. She gets it done.

Change is really simple — it just comes down to taking different actions.
When you’re about to do that thing you usually do (going to the couch and turning on the Xbox) you do a different action instead (grab your workout shoes).

This 5-step exercise shows you the hard facts. What do you want to improve, and what are you actually doing to improve it?

Notice how there’s no step that says “Write down all the stories about what’s made you this way?

You have to stop clinging to the idea that the way you are is permanent because it’s how you’ve always been.

Why this Exercise Works

The only way you’re ever going to be as wealthy, fit, or in love as you want to be is by first deciding that it’s nonnegotiable. You are going to make it happen. And to make it happen, you need to get clear on what actions will get you there.

You must decide that becoming your ideal self isn’t “unrealistic” anymore. It’s not going to be hard.

Look at your list. Look at all the actions you haven’t taken, and circle at least ONE that you are going to start tomorrow.

Set a daily alarm on your phone. Place sticky notes where you’ll see them. Put whatever little reminders in place that will keep this new action in your mind.

Successful people aren’t smarter than you. They just do the small tasks every single day that keep them on track to their goals.

Once you decide that those goals CAN actually happen for you if you MAKE them happen, then it becomes fucking exciting to watch yourself accomplish them.

Change becomes infinitely easier when it’s embraced instead of forced.

One Key Takeaway

This is your life. It’s happening right now. And you can either wish it was a certain way, or you can decide that you want it bad enough to make it happen.

Give yourself the attention that you give to shit that doesn’t matter.

Get really clear on what you’re unhappy with and who you want to be. Then, start taking action.

You’re the only person you’re gonna spend every second of the rest of your life with. So, why not be someone you actually like, instead of convincing yourself that it’s too hard?

trade your stories on why it’s hard to change for the actions that will change you.
