The Trick to Keep Going When You Feel like Giving Up.

Cry if you need to, then do this.

Have you ever felt that “What’s the point?” feeling? I have.

I know how it feels to think that your life is kind of meaningless.

Like if you died, sure…some people would be really sad. They’d probably even miss you for the rest of their lives.
But they wouldn’t have been really impacted by you.

They wouldn’t look back and say “She changed my life. I’m a better person because of something she did.”

I felt this way because I didn’t truly believe that I was having a positive impact on other people.

And I know now that I want to. I want to inspire and motivate people, to help them become happier and more whole.

Because once you get a taste of that, it changes you.
When someone reaches out to you and says…

“Thank you for helping me do this”
“I wouldn’t have done this without you”
“This changed my life”

Holy shit — that is powerful. It’s like motivation magic.

You could be at your lowest point ever, but when someone tells you that you had a real impact on them, it lifts you up.

I believe it actually makes me better, which then inspires me to help more people — and that cycle continues. I help you by helping me by helping you.

But despite all that inspiration, I really struggle sometimes to not give up. That’s what this post is about.

When those fearful moments hit me, I do the following…

  1. Burst (usually in the form of tears)

  2. Breathe myself back to normal

  3. Take the next small step.

Let me explain…

inspired idiots - why it works

I had a day recently where I was like “What the hell am I even DOING?

See, I typically make progress and avoid feeling overwhelmed by just focusing on the now.

I plan my steps today, I execute those steps, and I don’t allow myself to think about the “What if?” of 10 steps from now. That works for me.

But every so often, I have a moment where I stop and look up from today. I think about things like taxes and competition and all the challenges coming our way, and I’m like…

Oh my god! How will we ever do this?
How are we gonna pay for a wedding and wisdom teeth removals and business expenses and a home?
Are we just playing around and calling it life and pretending everything will work out?
So many people would look at us right now and scoff.

‘Idiots,’ they’d say.”

I might give people the impression that I have this unstoppable confidence — like I don’t care if anyone calls me an idiot. That is not the case.

Sometimes, I feel easily stoppable.

But I’ve just realized that no one will ever judge me as much as I judge me.

I’ve thought so many viscous things about myself.

I’m my biggest critic. And you are probably yours, too.

inspired idiots - why this matters
85% of the things we worry about never actually happen.

So, yesterday, I borderline sobbed because I felt skeptical and overwhelmed with fear.

That “What if none of this works out?” fear.

I laid on the couch for a while, feeling stuck. Frozen.

Then I thought “If someone else came to me in this situation, what would I urge them to do?

I’d probably tell them to just take a step.

You’re fear freezing because you’re thinking about 10 steps from now.
Stop! You’re not there yet.

You can anticipate it all you want — but by doing that, you’re skipping focusing on right now.

So, instead of wasting time on meaningless worry, just think about what’s actually happening right now. Just take the right now step.

For me, that was: “Make this video outline.”

And in the process of taking that single next step, you’ll realize what small step will come next.

Soon, you’ll feel more clear on how to keep moving — one step at a time.

inspired idiots TAKEAWAY

When you’re feeling critical, or overwhelmed, or like you’re an idiot, just take a step.

Don’t stop. Don’t wallow and feel sorry for yourself.

Burst if you need to.

Breathe.

Step.

The next time you’re feeling that “What if it doesn’t work out?” fear -- burst, breathe, step. You’ve got this.
