The real currency you’re probably overlooking.
What you can learn from a Kardashian.
What makes someone like Kim Kardashian so successful?
Like what exactly is she known for?
If I asked you what Lebron James is famous for, you’d say basketball. For Mark Zuckerberg, it’d be his invention of Facebook. Christina Aguilera is undoubtedly known for her singing voice.
So, if Kim Kardashian isn’t known for something……how is it that she makes more money than all of them? (It’s true…I got Alexa to confirm that one!)
Here’s the answer: she’s famous for knowing what to do to get attention — because attention is currency.
Attention is currency. People will pay with it, and they will pay for it.
If you take a quick look at Kim’s journey, you’ll see what I mean:
She put herself in the circles of famous people like Paris Hilton.
She made a sex tape that got “leaked.”
She participates in a TV show that shares her entire life.
She goes on Dancing With the Stars despite saying that she’s not a good dancer—knowing that if she performs awfully, people will talk about her even more.
She posts on social media every couple days.
Her timeline is a consistent string of events that draw attention to her.
And you don’t need to take my word for it. Kim openly talks about how she always wanted to be famous.
She knows that fame (attention) is currency, and that people will pay her for it.
YouTube proves this: Mr. Beast earns more money from ONE video than I would have earned in 36 years as a corporate marketing manager.
So, how does this help those of us still working on becoming successful?
Once you become known for something, even in a small circle, you open the door for money-making opportunities.
Opportunities for attention are gateways that lead you down paths to paydays.
Let’s say you’re a new entrepreneur, and you’re focusing on helping local business owners get more customers.
Your money paydays might feel small at first —$500 here, $750 there— but what you’re earning in opportunity is bigger than you think.
And if you see everything as a huge opportunity, and actually put the effort in to prove yourself, the bigger paydays will follow.
That plumber you worked your ass off for is going to talk to his other business owner friends about you.
That non-profit manager you gave free advice to will think of you when someone asks about marketing help.
This is what we can learn from people like Kim Kardashian — because as much as some of you might dislike her, you can’t deny that she’s made her entire family immensely successful.
She did that by throwing herself into opportunities that bring her attention and give her the next opportunity.
So here’s how to use this to grow your business:
1. Leverage Attention
Be known for something specific. Who exactly do you help, and what problem do you solve for them? Share content that’s valuable for those people to show them what you do and gain visibility.
Talk to people. You won’t get attention if you don’t put yourself out there. Attend events and participate in online communities to connect with other people.
Tip: instead of cold messaging people on Facebook, post helpful content in groups where your ideal clients are.
If you’re targeting local gym owners, join small business communities and share simple tips gym owners can use to sell more memberships. Tag local gyms in it, or send it to the owners directly.
2. SHOW People
Offer free trials to show people what you do, and attract your first clients.
When you’re a newbie and someone asks for referrals or to see your website, all they’re really saying is: I want to know what to expect from working with you.
Free trials take care of this.
Say yes to opportunities that might not pay much initially but can lead to bigger prospects and visibility. Someone who starts out as a $500 per month client can absolutely become a $5,000 per month one.
3. Build Relationships
Overdeliver for your clients to get strong testimonials. When you prove your worth to someone and prioritize the relationship over the money, those people will become your biggest advocates.
In my experience, the best way to get clients is to let someone else “sell” how awesome you are.
Nurture connections. Stay in touch with clients and industry contacts to maintain relationships and open doors to future opportunities.
Just because you didn’t close a client in January doesn’t mean you can’t close them in March.
If you talk with someone who seems like an awesome fit for working together, tell them that! Contact them a month later and tell them they still cross your mind. You might be surprised to find that they’re ready to work together now.
Embrace every opportunity to showcase your skills and gain visibility. If you focus on offering value, overdelivering for your clients, and nurturing relationships, you’ll create a ripple effect of positive attention.
Attention is a really valuable asset — the more you leverage it, the more doors will open.
